Vietnam, from buzzing cities filled with millions of motorbikes, incredible street food (especially noodles and banh mi), rich history evident in French colonial architecture, diverse landscapes from Ha Long Bay to rice paddies, and generally warm, welcoming people, despite initial culture shock from the chaotic traffic and fast pace.
Traffic in Vietnam
Traffic in Vietnam is a unique and often chaotic experience, primarily characterized by a massive volume of motorbikes. Sidewalks are often used for parking or even riding.
At first glance, traffic appears very chaotic, but drivers operate on an intuitive system of "give-and-take." They constantly signal their presence with light honking (not an aggressive gesture) and navigate around obstacles, including pedestrians.
Vietnam has stunning diversity of landscapes: we were consistently impressed by the variety, from the mist-covered mountains and rice terraces of Sapa to the iconic limestone karsts of Ha Long Bay and the vibrant waterways of the Mekong Delta.
